Winter Wonderland In Tallinn

January 2014 turns Tallinn into winter wonderland with an authentic winter, streets filled with shining lights and yuletide charm. Tallinn offers many wallet friendly opportunities to enjoy this magical  season in town.

This pair of picturesque, ivy-covered towers at the beginning of Viru Street – one of the main pedestrian arteries into Old Town – is often the very first glimpse visitors get of historic Tallinn. Anyone passing between them couldn't be blamed for thinking they've left the 21st century behind and landed smack in the middle of the 18th.

The towers are actually only the foregates of what was a much more complex gate system built in the 14th century. It included a large, square tower that stood father back along the street, close to where the city wall can be seen.

Most of the gate was pulled down in the 1880s to make room for traffic, but these two towers remained and have since become a symbol of the town.

Winter Wonders in Old Tallinn

                         Finally here: the much anticipated first snow

Tallinn has had a long and beautiful autumn this year, and with the first snow, the city finally embarks on a frosty journey through a winter fairytale. 

The local weather forecast agency Ilm.ee predicts more snow throughout December, with mild overall temperatures varying between plus and minus degrees.

This also brings along opportunities for winter activities, including the opening of Nõmme ice rink on 14 December.

Winter Wonders in Tallinn

For those able to bear a -10C (or -25C, depends on your luck) weather, Tallinn during winters offers a lot of fun. It doesn’t matter if you’re here for a short time of a few hours, a long week-end or enjoying a full holiday, there’s plenty to do. After you’ve got on your socks, a second pair of socks, really good shoes, many layers of cardigans, several scarves, a warm hat (definitely with ear-flaps, ushankas are the best!) and a coat or two, you’re ready to go and explore!

Background information about Tallinn

Officially, there are a bit less than 500 000 people living in Tallinn, most of whom are Estonians. Russians (about a third) are the biggestnational minority, followed by Belorussians, Ukrainians and Finns making a total of 6% when combined. Estonian and Russian are the most common languages, though you won’t have any trouble with English (especially in the service sector) and German and Finnish are quite widely spoken, too.

Geographically, Tallinn is situated in the northern coast of Estonia, on the banks of the Gulf of Finland. It is the closest capital city to capitals of Finland (Helsinki, 80km); Latvia (Riga, 315km) and Sweden (Stockholm, 380km).

Length of the coastline is about 50km and renovated beach promenade close to city centre, running by the Pirita bay, is a popular place among morning runners, walkers and cyclists.

Local population density is quite low – only about 2551 people per square kilometre. It is about 5 times lower than London and 2 times lower than Moscow.

Biggest district is Lasnamägi with it’s 100 000 people, while city centre (Kesklinn) has about 35 000 people living there.
